admin July 29, 2025 4 minutes read

From a middle-class Delhi household to revolutionizing India’s eyewear industry, Peyush Bansal’s story is one of grit, vision, and relentless ambition. As the co-founder and CEO of Lenskart, valued at over $5.6 billion, Bansal has transformed how millions see the world—literally. Why does this matter for your future? His journey offers actionable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs chasing big dreams. This biography dives into Peyush Bansal’s life, career, and the strategies behind his success as a trailblazing Indian businessman.

Early Life

Peyush Bansal was born on April 26, 1985, in New Delhi, India, into a middle-class Hindu family. Raised by his father, Bal Kishan Bansal, a chartered accountant, and his mother, Kiran Bansal, a homemaker, Peyush grew up with an elder brother and a younger sister, Neha. His childhood in Greater Kailash-II was modest, yet his parents instilled a strong work ethic and a passion for learning. At Don Bosco School, Peyush excelled academically, but his entrepreneurial spark was evident early on. He often dreamed of building something impactful, inspired by his role model, Bill Gates.

Education

Peyush’s academic journey wasn’t without hurdles. He attempted the IIT entrance exam but didn’t clear it—a setback that could’ve derailed many. Undeterred, he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in IT, Control, and Automation, at McGill University in Canada (2002–2006). To support himself, he worked part-time as a receptionist, honing his resilience. His academic excellence earned him the British Association Medal in 2006. Later, he returned to India to complete a Management Programme for Entrepreneurs and Family Businesses (MPEFB) at IIM Bangalore (2008–2009), sharpening his business acumen.

Career

Peyush’s career began with a prestigious role as a Program Manager at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, in 2007. Working on MS Office, he focused on enhancing user experiences, but his entrepreneurial itch led him to resign within a year. Returning to India during the 2007–2009 global recession, he launched SearchMyCampus.com, a classifieds portal for college students, addressing needs like housing and internships. Though moderately successful, it wasn’t scalable.

In 2010, Peyush co-founded Lenskart with Amit Chaudhary and Sumeet Kapahi, targeting India’s underserved eyewear market. Inspired by a report stating 40% of the world’s blind population lived in India, with only 25% accessing glasses, Peyush saw an opportunity. Lenskart began as an online contact lens retailer but soon expanded to eyeglasses and sunglasses, blending affordability with style. By 2024, Lenskart boasted over 2,500 stores, 5,500 employees, and a $5.6 billion valuation, becoming a unicorn in 2019. Peyush’s strategic acquisitions, like Japan’s Owndays in 2022, fueled global expansion. His investments in startups like Feedo and Push Sports further showcase his commitment to innovation.

Peyush gained nationwide fame as a judge on Shark Tank India, where his empathetic yet sharp insights won hearts. However, a 2022 controversy over a lighthearted comment about chartered accountants sparked backlash, leading to a trending “Say No to Lenskart” campaign. Peyush issued a heartfelt apology, clarifying his intent, and regained public goodwill.

Personal Life

Peyush married Nidhi Mittal on June 12, 2011, and the couple has a son, Evan. Nidhi, a key supporter, played a pivotal role in convincing Peyush to join Shark Tank India. Despite his hectic schedule, Peyush values family time, often sharing moments like scuba diving with Nidhi on social media. A self-professed movie buff and football enthusiast, he finds balance through travel and sports. His down-to-earth nature and empathy, evident in his support for farmers on Shark Tank India, make him a relatable figure.

Awards and Honors

Peyush’s contributions have earned him accolades, including:

  • Red Herring Top 100 Asia Award (2012) for Valyoo Technologies.
  • Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year (2012) at the Indian e-Tail Awards.
  • The Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence (2025), recognizing his transformative impact on India’s business landscape.

These honors reflect his ability to blend innovation with social impact, making eyewear accessible to millions.

Philanthropy

Peyush Bansal’s journey from a middle-class Delhi boy to the architect of a $5.6 billion eyewear empire is a testament to resilience and innovation. His story inspires entrepreneurs to dream big, take risks, and prioritize customer needs. By making vision correction accessible, Peyush has not only built a business but also changed lives.
