Aadit Palicha (born 15 October 2001) is an Indian businessman and the co-founder, and CEO of Zepto, a quick-commerce application transforming how groceries are delivered in India by operating a 10-minute delivery system. Palicha is at 23 one of the youngest self-made millionaires in India and the person behind making Zepto one of the fastest-growing companies in the e-commerce business with an investment of just over one year and achieving a valuation of around 5 billion dollars by 2024. His story as a Stanford drop out turned into a success story in the startup ecosystem of India is an inspirational one to the young entrepreneurs on a global level.
Early Life
Aadit Palicha was born on 15 October 2001 in Mumbai, Maharashtra India to an entrepreneur family. Both his father, Kavit Palicha, an engineer and of Zepto and his mother being Urvashi Palicha, CEO of a recruitment company Search Point, which works in the finance and technology domain, encouraged his curiosity in the art of cracking problems at an early age. The family moved to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates when Aadit was very young. He had a very close connection with his home town, visiting Mumbai frequently at vacations. A bright kid, Aadit was interested in technology, often labored to create games and tools on the PC. He was excellently exposed to the vibrant life of Dubai and the exposure to the networks of his parents shaped his entrepreneurial spirit.
Eduaction
At the GEMS Modern Academy in Dubai, Palicha performed well both in academics as well as extra curricular activities. He was a national debater, deputy head boy and president of the Modern Debating Society. He is a 2020 valedictorian with a perfect score of 45 in International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; his majors are Mathematics and Computer Science. His brilliance in studies got him in Stanford University to study Computer Science. The COVID-19 pandemic however, derailed his studies in which he came back to Mumbai in 2020. A decision to quit school at Stanford and concentrate on investing in Zepto was the genesis of an outstanding career by Palicha who opted to be an entrepreneur instead of an academic.
Career
Palicha, started his company at the age of 17, when he developed the idea of carpooling based on traffic jams when he traveled to take his younger brother Ishaan to school in Dubai through an application called GoPool. GoPool was funded on a grant by Emirates NBD and was running between 2018 and 2020 but did not scale. Between July 2019 and March 2020, Palicha was a project lead of PryvaSee, an AI project based on summarizing privacy policies. In June 2020 he started KiranaKart, a grocery delivery application in Mumbai with his childhood friend Kaivalya Vohra. KiranaKart closed in March 2021 after its struggles to discover a product-market combination.
Nevertheless, Palicha and Vohra established Zepto in April 2021 by using the COVID-induced demand in instant groceries delivery. Such innovative practices like demand forecasting through the use of AI and a network of dark stores has allowed Zepto to deliver within 10 min, unlike its competitors, Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart. In less than a month, Zepto was already labeled as worth $200 million propelling to $570 million in five months and $5 billion in August of 2024. With investors such as Y Combinator, Glade Brook Capital, Nexus Venture, Zepto now has more than 250 dark stores in 10 cities of India, and it fulfills 1.5 million orders every day. The vision incorporated by Palicha of sustainable but technologically-oriented logistics has made Zepto become a leader in the world of quick commerce, and an IPO in 2025 is planned.
Personal Life
Aadit Palicha lives in Mumbai where Zepto is based. Single, he adopts a low profile in the society concentrating in business and self-development. He acknowledges support by his family, parents, and his younger brother Ishaan being there when he needed them the most. Palicha is adamant on life-long learning; he usually refers to his experience in real life as a teacher. He stresses the importance of ethical and sustainable business despite the criticism he received when Zepto started to grow fast.
