In the heart of Patna, Bihar, a mathematician named Anand Kumar turned adversity into opportunity, creating Super 30, a program that has transformed the lives of underprivileged students aiming for India’s prestigious IITs. From a modest background to global recognition, Kumar’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to education. Why does this matter? His work proves that talent knows no economic bounds, offering hope to millions. This biography dives into Anand Kumar’s life, his groundbreaking Super 30 initiative, and the legacy he’s building for future generations.

Early Life

Anand Kumar was born on January 1, 1973, in Patna, Bihar, into a family of modest means. His father, a clerk in the postal department, couldn’t afford private schooling, so Kumar attended a Hindi-medium government school, Patna High School. It was here that his passion for mathematics ignited. Despite financial constraints, young Anand devoured mathematical journals, often traveling six hours to Varanasi’s Central Library at Banaras Hindu University to access foreign publications. His curiosity and grit laid the foundation for a remarkable journey, proving that determination can overcome even the toughest barriers.

Education

Kumar’s academic brilliance shone early. During his graduation at Bihar National College, Patna University, he published papers on number theory in Mathematical Spectrum and The Mathematical Gazette, a rare feat for an undergraduate. His talent earned him an offer from the University of Cambridge in 1994, a dream opportunity for any aspiring mathematician. Tragically, his father’s sudden death and the family’s financial struggles forced him to decline. Instead of despairing, Kumar channeled this setback into a mission to ensure others wouldn’t face similar obstacles. This pivotal moment shaped his future, birthing the idea of Super 30.

Career

In 1992, Kumar began teaching mathematics, renting a small classroom for Rs. 300 a month to start the Ramanujan School of Mathematics (RSM). What began with two students grew to nearly 500 within three years, a testament to his teaching prowess. In 2002, inspired by a poor student who couldn’t afford IIT coaching, Kumar, alongside former Bihar DGP Abhayanand, launched Super 30. This initiative selects 30 economically disadvantaged students annually through a competitive exam, offering them free coaching, study materials, lodging, and meals for a year to prepare for the IIT-JEE, the gateway to India’s elite Indian Institutes of Technology.

The results speak for themselves. By 2018, 422 of 510 Super 30 students secured IIT admissions, with a perfect success rate in 2010 when all 30 students cleared the exam. Kumar’s mother, Jayanti Devi, cooks for the students, while his brother, Pranav Kumar, manages operations. Super 30 operates without government or private funding, sustained solely by Kumar’s earnings from RSM. His innovative teaching simplifies complex concepts, making mathematics accessible and inspiring. Kumar’s work has been featured in documentaries by Discovery Channel and Al Jazeera, and he’s spoken at global institutions like MIT, Stanford, and IIM Ahmedabad.

Challenges and Controversies

Success didn’t come without hurdles. Kumar faced attacks from rival coaching institutes in Patna, including a violent assault where a staff member was injured. The Bihar government provided him with security guards after the incident. Some media reports, like a 2018 Dainik Jagran article, alleged Kumar diverted students to RSM for profit, claims he vehemently denied as smear campaigns by competitors. Despite these challenges, Kumar’s focus remains on his students, with supporters like Bihar’s Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav and actor Shatrughan Sinha defending his integrity.

Personal Life

Anand Kumar is married to Ritu Rashmi, and they have a son, Jagat Kumar. In 2019, Kumar revealed he has been battling acoustic neuroma, a rare brain tumor causing significant hearing loss in his right ear. Despite this, he continues his mission, undergoing treatment at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. His family plays a central role in Super 30—his mother’s home-cooked meals nourish the students, while his brother ensures smooth operations. Kumar’s personal struggles mirror his students’, making his empathy and dedication deeply authentic.

Awards and Honors

Kumar’s contributions have earned him widespread acclaim. In 2010, Time magazine named Super 30 among the Best of Asia, and Newsweek listed it as one of the world’s four most innovative schools. He received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2023 for his work in education. Other honors include:

  • Ramanujan Mathematics Award at the Eighth National Mathematics Convention in Rajkot.
  • Honorary Doctorate of Science (DSc) from Karpagam University, Coimbatore.
  • Maharishi Ved Vyas Award by the Madhya Pradesh Government.
  • Baroda Sun Life Achievement Award by Bank of Baroda.
  • Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Education Award by the Bihar Government in 2010.
  • Global Education Award 2018 by Malabar Gold & Diamonds in Dubai.
  • Bharat Ganit Ratna Award 2022 by DASA India.
  • UAE Golden Visa in 2024, recognizing his global impact.

In 2024, Kumar was named the honorary ambassador of Korean Tourism, fostering cultural and educational exchanges. His biography, Super 30: Anand Kumar, written by Biju Mathew, was presented to former President Pranab Mukherjee and released by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar.

Philanthropy

Anand Kumar’s Super 30 is more than an educational program—it’s a beacon of hope for underprivileged youth. By providing free coaching, meals, and lodging, Kumar ensures that poverty doesn’t snuff out talent. His refusal of government or corporate funding underscores his belief in self-reliance, inspiring others to take action. His story reminds us that one person’s vision can change countless lives.
