Because it’s a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of mentoring future stars. Join us to uncover the life of a true sports icon.

Early Life

Born on April 11, 1983, in Bangalore, India, Anup Sridhar grew up in a city buzzing with energy but far from the global badminton spotlight. His childhood was steeped in sports, with badminton becoming his passion early on. By age 10, he was already competing in local tournaments, showing a natural flair for the game. His parents, recognizing his talent, supported his rigorous training schedule, balancing school and hours on the court. This dedication laid the foundation for a career that would elevate Indian badminton to new heights.

Education

Sridhar’s academic journey took him to Jain University in Bangalore, where he pursued his studies while intensifying his badminton training. Unlike many athletes who prioritize sports over education, Sridhar excelled in both. His discipline in the classroom mirrored his commitment on the court, earning him respect from peers and mentors. Jain University’s supportive environment allowed him to train under top coaches, setting the stage for his rise as India’s badminton prodigy.

Career

Anup Sridhar’s career is a highlight reel of grit and glory. He burst onto the national scene by clinching the Indian National Badminton Championships in 2005 and 2006, establishing himself as India’s top player. His world ranking peaked at 24 in 2008, a remarkable feat in a sport dominated by international giants. Sridhar’s defining moment came at the 2007 World Championships, where he defeated Taufik Hidayat, a former world no. 1 and Olympic gold medalist, in a grueling match that showcased his tenacity.

His achievements didn’t stop there. Sridhar represented India at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He also competed in the 2006 Asian Games and played in elite leagues in Denmark and France. In 2013, he joined the inaugural Indian Badminton League with Pune Pistons, defeating world-ranked Hu Yun in a standout performance.

Today, Sridhar channels his expertise into coaching at the Anup Sridhar Badminton Academy in Bangalore. Having trained under legends like Prakash Padukone and at Gopichand Academy, he now mentors young athletes, sharing insights from his global experience in Denmark, France, and Indonesia. His academy’s curriculum-based coaching has produced promising players, cementing his legacy as a mentor.

Personal Life

Off the court, Anup Sridhar is known for his humility and dedication to family. While he keeps his personal life private, those close to him describe a man who values balance—between his career, mentorship, and personal growth. His time abroad, training in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, shaped his worldview, making him a global ambassador for Indian sports.
